XMPP in social networks infrastructure
It seems there’s room for XMPP in regard of social services also (a quote from Social Network Portability, by Anders and David, respectively):

LiveJournal already provides a Jabber account for each user with a roster populated with their friends on the service.
It’s especially nice to see thoughts of applying XMPP in the infrastructure level, not just for personal messaging.
